Child With Autism excluded from Class Trip
Every child should get the same opotunites at school, but what happens when the school isn't giving out those same opotunites to everyone? According to CTV News a BC mom from Nanaimo is speaking out after her son with Autism was not included in a class field trip. The boy with autism named Luca sat with his education assistant in an empty classroom while the rest of his kindergarten class was enjoying a field trip at a bowling alley. When Lucas mom was dropping him off for school she found out about the class trip for the first time. The mom says she was never notified or told about the field trip.
The poor mom watched her child walk into an empty classroom. Why wouldn't the school have notified her? According to CTV News the principal wrote in a email saying, "With regards to field trips, I regret we did not discuss the bowling field trip in advance." Poor Luca should have been there on his school feildtrip. Its no secret that kids with disabilities need extra support and help, but these are children that try their best to fit in and when situations like this happens it makes it harder for those children. We need our schools to provide a positive and welcoming setting for children, not a place where children are not included in activities. Reading this article was heartbreaking, all children should be treated the same expeaclly at school. I have a brother with autism and I couldn't imagine how I would have reacted if that had happened to him.
